THE COLLATED ANSWER [final]Introduction
The forklift is a good means of transportation when it comes to the task of lifting. Forklift is an asset that almost all warehouses need in order to carry out it's daily logistical activities. In a warehouse or DC, there are bound to be inbound and outbound activities. Unloading and loading of pallets goods on and off trucks, and unstuffing and stuffing of goods into containers can be efficiently carried out by the use of a forklift due its speed and huge lifting capacity (as mentioned in previous entry) as compared to a pallet jack. Although the driver needs to have a license in handling a forklift, however, it is still very useful for the workers. This is because; the forklift works mechanically, unlike other Material Handling Equipment. There are a couple kinds of forklift available. Rider trucks, reach-type forklifts, electric forklift and specialized forklift.
It is so called "can't live without" equipment by most contractors since it is so user friendly and lighten the workload so much compared to doing it manually. You can just imagine if cell phone doesn't exist. It is the same concept.
Reason for increasing popularity
Next, the reason why it is increasing in China’s market could be due to they’re getting repeat business. Because, the manufacturers are producing the finest quality of forklift and that is why orders keep coming back.
This can be proved by the following extract, which is taken from http://www.forkliftaction.com/news/newsdisplay.aspx?nwid=4960 “The units are performing incredibly well in the field, so much so that we’re seeing repeat orders from the same customers looking to add to their fleet,” says Mark Di Vito, president of Terraquip in Concord, Ontario, Canada. “We’re also seeing repeat orders from government authorities on trucks, which is an amazing sign.
Among other forklifts, there is a popular forklifts known as the telehandlers/telescopic forklifts. Telehandlers also known as telescopic forklifts are adopted only when goods are stored at a very high level. It is actually a forklift attached at the end of the long arm of a crane. This kind of forklift also have more control over the placement of the pronged lifts attached to a crane that comes over the top of a truck. The reason why they are popular is due to the height. this kind of forklift can raise to variable reaches and thus is popular for big DC.
Advantages over other MHE
Forklift is small and easy to move around with compared with the larger-sized cranes, truck-mounted lifting system. It has advantages when it comes to a warehouse with limited spaces, has narrow aisles in the production area. Therefore, unlike cranes, chutes, it doesn’t need a lot of space. It can move easily in between the small aisles compared to the big and gigantic cranes.
Most forklifts are like rider trucks, which enable the operator to be seated during operation.
They also need not carry the goods around. Thus, it reduces fatigue in the operators as they may have to work for long hours. There is another kind of forklifts called the reach-type forklifts (commonly known as ''stacker'') where the operator operates the vehicle in a standing position.
Stackers are commonly use to lift pallets of goods to put-away to locations on racks that are of usually of 3-4 level high. Unlike trolleys, which have required workers to carry the goods before putting them onto the equipment. Also, it will require more force to push the trolley around.
Electric models are also available in the market. These models are smaller in size with extremely short turning radii and lifting capacities. This choice would be better if the aisles are wide enough, to prevent causing damages to the goods. Whether if the ground is level and paved or has a gravel base, a forklift can be a very useful, versatile and productive piece of equipment for moving and loading.
As the properties of the forklifts greatly suit the needs of a warehouse or DC, they become very popular. They come in various models that allow the warehouse management to choose which best suits their operations. Suppliers have been constantly improving on existing models and come up with new models to suit markets' needs. Few examples of suppliers include TCM Corporation, Jungheinrich and NACCO Industries, Inc.
For example, they can customize the forklift with it equipped with devices that lift and carry multiple pieces. Unlike trolleys and pallet jacks, this can only transport certain standard products. A forklift make up of the correct devices helps make moving, stacking, handling andloading easier

Agreeing to what Julia and Ivy had posted, it seems that forklift is an asset that almost all warehouses need in order to carry out it's daily logistical activities. It is just a matter of which kind of forklift a company needs according to their specification. Thus, forklifts now become a common material handling equipment that almost all warehouses possesses compared to other types of material handling equipments. It is so called "can't live without" equipment by most contractors since it is so user friendly and lighten the workload so much compared to doing it manually. You can just imagine if cell phone doesn't exist. It is the same concept.
Different forklifts meets different needs in the warehouse. Forklifts varies in shapes, sizes, and whether they are meant for long or short distant movements or low or high elevation. The more popular among forklifts are known as the telehandlers/telescopic forklifts which have variable reaches.
Telehandlers also known as telescopic forklifts are adopted only when goods are stored at a very high level. It is actually a forklift attached at the end of the long arm of a crane. There is one thing that contrators need to look out for when buying forklifts and that is the replacement parts as some of the parts are not always available in the market.

Unlike cranes, chutes, it doesnt need alot of space. it can move easily in between the small aisles compared to the big and gigantic cranes. Also, there are different sizes of forkifts. it allows buyer to choose the size of forklift they want and according to their products. Unlike other Material Handling Equipment, special forklifts can be set up with specialized equipment that uses hydraulically clamps. It can even rotates products compared to any other standard forks. They are made to satisfy a bigger variety of goods and products.
Although the driver needs to have a liscense in handling a forklift, however, it is still very useful for the workers. This is because, the forklift works mechanically. For my internship and final year project, I am being attached to Menlo Worldwide Asia Pacific Pte Ltd and Yusen Air and Sea Service(S) Pte Ltd respectively. Both are 3PL companies and the pictures below show the material handling equipment used by them. The equipment are being catorized into the 5 groups of MHE for easy understanding.
[1] Transport Equipment
Forklifts (Gas/ Electric) - Gas forklifts can be refueled quickly and easily, but they require storage for the fuel, and the fuel can become expensive. Even though gas forklifts are less expensive to purchase initially, the cost of fuel quickly adds up, making them most expensive per use than electric. They can never be used indoors because of their toxic emissions and fear of carbon monoxide poisoning. Gas forklifts can handle larger loads and can be used for minor pushing or towing as well. And as for electric forklifts, batteries are installed in them. The batteries are usually designed to last for at least one standard shift before needing a recharge, and the recharge station must be in a dry, well-ventilated area. Electric forklifts are quiet and inexpensive (low operating cost) as they do not need storage area for gas or diesel fuel.
- Stacker - Its ''forks'' are able to reach higher than a forklift to store or retrieve a single pallet of goods from the pallet rack (above 2 levels).
- Pallet Jack - It is a tool to raise or lower a single pallet simply to provide clearance from the floor for manual (hand) pulling.
- Order Picker - Similar to a forklift except that the operator can rise up to the load to collect the items and place them on the pallet lifted by the ''forks''. However, the operator is proned to falls thus has to put on the safety belt.
- Order picking trolleys
# Trolley with steps to retrieve items at slightly above height.
# The conveyor belt connects the kitting area to the packing area.
- Omni Lift - It make use of a conveyor belt system and to vertically lift single pallet of goods up to any storey of the warehouse. It provides fast movement of goods, eliminating time to send the goods through the cargo lift, thus make the warehouse operations more efficient whenever there is receiving or shipping of goods.
# Omni lift at level 1 - Goods are being placed on the conveyor...
# Omni lift at level 3 - ....and arrive at the 3rd storey.
[2] Positioning Equipment
- Dock leveler
[3] Unit Load Formation Equipment
- Metal Drums
- Pallets (wooden/plastics) and cartons
- Wooden crates
[4] Storage Equipment
- Automated Storage Retrieval System (ASRS) - It provides a fast way of storing and retrieving goods with the minimun effort, time and errors. To put-away, the system will check for empty locations in the racks in the computer. A pallet at a time will be placed on the conveyor belt. Choose the location for storage and after all items are being scanned, the automated crane will pick up the pallet and be directed to the appropriate aisle to store the pallet of goods into the empty location. For retrieval of goods, simply scan the picklist and the automated crane will proceed to pick all the required items and place them on the conveyor.
- Pallet Rack (also known as "Heavy-Duty Rack")
[5] Identification and Control Equipment
- Barcoding 1 (Linear Barcode)
# Items are being scanned for their serial numbers during the packing stage before shipping out to the customers.
# The 2D barcodes are able to encode much more highly detailed information than linear barcodes, making it a more acccurate and efficient to track inventory from the unloading dock to the end-users.
When goods arrive, to put-away, the material handler will scan the product before scanning the barcode on the rack so that the system will capture the location of the stored goods. For order picking, the picker will scan the barcode on the picklist. From the screen of the 2D scanner that shows the items to be picked, their quantity and locations, the picker will proceed to the location to scan the each all the required items after being picked.

Practices of Material Handling EquipmentCompany introduce practices in order to save costs and increases the profits. With Material Handling Equipments, it reduces work time, in a safer way and increase efficency. As mentioned in the previous entry, mater handling equipment allows movement of products through the warehouse in a more easy way. Examples include Automated Guided Vehicle Systems.
To bring out the best in the equipments, warehouse automation is used in line with a well planned put- away processes. One of the best practice companies put in place is the flexible and efficient material handling processes with the help of up to date technology to ensure that the needs and wants in business are met.
Common material handling automation
- radio frequency equipment in fork trucks
- automated conveyor systems with sorters and diverters
- automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS).
RF equipment: Employing RF terminals in lift trucks and portable RF devices, boost productivity and reduce data entry errors. These devices, with the warehouse management system (WMS) can send employees product move tasks and give information about the product that needs to be moved. It can also work with bar coded labels or RFID tags.
Automated conveyor systems:will sort products accordingly into the right place, thus reducing travel time and handling. Productivity and labor costs can be significantly improved when transit time from receiving areas to storage zones is shortened, or when product is relocated and stored in case-size lots.
Automated storage/retrieval systems: AS/RS benefits are maximized storage space, increased put-away productivity, reduced warehouse labor and improvements to put-away accuracy. this is effective when it comes to narrow aisles and extremely high racks in large output in distribution centers (DC). although AS/RS is a capital intensive practice, however, if things are planned carefully and thoroughly, it is as efficient as other practices.

Trends of Material Handling Equipment
Manufacturers now demand for equipment that is less complex, work smarter and require less maintainence so that cost can be reduced. The following information was taken from a website. It shows some figures and the expected trend for the demand of Material Handling Equipment.
it mentioned that the countries all over the world has increased its demand for the materal handling equipments. equipments such as forklifts, conveyors, cartons, trucks and etc. overall, it increased 13% during the second quarter of the year 2007. this research was performed by World Industrial Truck Statistics.
the orders in Europe increased 22% in that period, compared to the previous year, 2006. indicidually, the Eastern Europe increased 51% in its demand for the forklifts and 18% in Western Europe. on the other hand, the demand from Asia's market recorded a rise in 15%. however, it does not prove the same to every country. for example, the demand for forklift in North Americian declined by 15%
German manufacturer,Jungheinrich expects demand for materials handling equipment to remain high in the second half of 2007, but they think that growth will drop marginally.

Introduction to the Material Handling Equipment II This is the continuation of the previous entry. it it will show some of the advantages and disadvantages of using the euipments.also, some pictures are added in to let readers have a clearer understanding of what MHEs are.
conveyors- classified under types of products, location of conveyor and whether if goods can be accumulate on it. examples of common conveyors are chute conveyor, gravity roller conveyor.
cranes- moves goods horizontally, vertically over restricted areas. can handle bigger variety of goods than conveyors. examples of common cranes are Jib cranes.
industrial trucks-move goods with no restriction, moved when the flow of goods is slow and low. more flexibility than conveyors and cranes.example of common industrial trucks are hand truck, pallet jack
no equipment-using manual help. the recommended weight for lifting is 51lbs
these equipments can raise the productivity since they are able to hold heavy and bulky goods. reduces human errors and mistakes as less human help is needed. examples of common positioning quipment are hoist,lift/tilt/turn table
it enables more items to be handled at the same time. this saves repeating work and saves time and effort. it uses standardized equipment and this saves the trouble of looking for specialty equipment. however, it takes time to form and break down. examples of common equipments are tote pans, cartons

Introduction of Material Handling Equipment (MHE)Material handling equipment is used in a warehouse for the movement and storage of material.
I have found out from a website that there are actually five different categories of Material Handling Equipment - mainly the Transport Equipment, Positioning Equipment, Unit Load Formation Equipment, Storage Equipment and Identification and Control Equipment.
Transport Equipments are basically equipments that are used to transport materials from one place to another. Be it transporting materials from the staging area to the storage area, or from the storage area to the loading bay receiving bay and so on. Some examples of Transport Equipments can range from conveyor belts, cranes, industrial trucks and even human.
Conveyor Belts
Bridge Crane
Forklift
Positioning Equipments are equipments used to position the material to ensure that they are in the appropriate positions for safety purposes or convenient for further handling. They are used for handling if materials at a single workplace. Some examples of Position Equipment are the dock leveler, ball transfer table, parts feeder and air pallet. They can also be positioned manually with no equipment used.
Dock Leveler
Ball Transfer Table
Parts Feeder
Air Pallet
Unit Load Formation Equipments are used to make sure that the materials maintain in their position while being stored or shipped. It is best if the maximum number of items can be used to form the unit load as it reduces handling cost and product damage. Some examples of Unit Load Formation Equipments are pallets, tote pans, cartons and crates.
Pallet
Tote Pans
Carton
Crate
Storage Equipments are used for holding materials and products. These storage equipments are to be able to meet the criteria for storing the materials and products. Some of the Storage Equipments include selective pallet racks, shelves, drive through racks and sliding racks.
Pallet racks
Shelves
Drive Through Racks
Sliding Racks
Identification and Control Equipments are used to communicate and coordinate flow of material within the warehouse. Information can be retrievable by the warehouse alone, its customers and suppliers. With this kind of equipment, not only can information be retrieved more efficiently and accurately at a shorter time, the warehouse can also gain better control of their inventory. Some examples of the Identification and Control Equipments are such as barcoding, radio frequency tag and magnetic stripe.
